The following are the ACGME Emergency Medicine Requirements for a scholarly project as well as some examples from previous residents.
Scholarly Project Guide
Research Projects & QI Projects
Research projects include such projects such as RCTs, literature review, Case reports, and surveys. Our research team in the department consists of Dr. Hartka, Dr. Glass and Dr. Sochor. If you are interested in working with the Emergency Medicine Research Office (EMRO) team, feel free to reach out to one of them.
Additionally, our administrative team of Dr. Wendell, Dr. Glass, Dr. Smaltz and Dr. Agraz are frequently working on various QI projects. Examples include development of our sameday clinic and rapid neurology follow up clinic.
Examples of various research projects can be found on our Publications page.
Presentations
We provide funding for each resident to go to a conference of their choosing whether that be ACEP or SAEM. We additionally provide funding for any resident planning on presenting at a conference, this has included wilderness medicine and toxicology conferences in the past few years.
Articles, Publications, Book chapters
Our attendings at UVA frequently provide opportunities to publish various articles or book chapters. You can see a list of these on our publications page.
Peer Reviewed Publications
Various EM publications provide “Instructions for author” that needs to be followed prior to submission. We encourage submission and publications in these journals and our faculty are happy to help with writing on specific topics. Examples of such journals include ACEP, AJEM, Annals of EM, Emergency Medicine Clinics of NA and many more. The following is an example produced by our resident Steve Garbin and attending Dr. Easter.
